RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Investigators say a gunman ambushed and killed an off-duty Riverside firefighter in front of his ex-girlfriend, then shot himself to death.
Riverside police Lt. Ed Blevins says the 41-year-old off-duty fireman, Nick Barrios, was walking a woman to her car at 3:30 a.m. Sunday when 36-year-old Rene Trejo confronted them on the street.
The lieutenant tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise that Trejo fired several rounds, mortally wounding Barrios. The off-duty firefighter died at a short time later at a hospital.
Investigators say the woman, who wasn't injured, went back into the house and Trejo followed her.
Blevins says Trejo, who had a relationship with the woman several months ago, then shot himself to death in front of her.
