RALEIGH -- A man who shot himself in the chest 13 months ago after gunning down his estranged girlfriend in a church day care center lot pleaded guilty Monday to second-degree murder.
Daniel Jerome Montgomery, 32, admitted in Wake County Superior Court to killing Jammie Shantal Street, a school bus driver from Fuquay-Varina with whom he had a rocky relationship. The deadly incident occurred Oct. 7, 2009, outside the St. Augusta Missionary Baptist Church inFuquay-Varina.
Street, who had a child with Montgomery, had just dropped off her two oldest children at the church day care center and was planning to take her youngest child to another center. But Montgomery showed up, according to prosecutors, and attacked and shot Street before turning the gun on himself.
Montgomery was sentenced to a maximum of 241/2 years in prison.
The stormy relationship between Montgomery and Street first came to the attention of police in February 2009, when Montgomery was charged with domestic trespassing after entering Street's home without her permission. He was released from jail on $3,000 bail the same day, court records show.
The trouble between them - and their relationship - continued through March.
About 6:15 a.m. on Oct. 7, 2009, witnesses said, Street's two older children ran into the day care at St. Augusta Missionary Baptist Church shouting that Montgomery was outside beating their mother. When a worker went out, she found the youngest child roaming the sidewalk. Soon after, she heard gunfire and ushered the boy inside.
Police found Street's body in the road and Montgomery in the bushes across the street.
