WHITTIER - Nearly a year after Sean Anthony Casillas was fatally stabbed during an argument with his girlfriend, the District Attorney's Office declined to file charges against the woman citing insufficient evidence.
However, the head supervising deputy DA at the Norwalk office is reviewing the case again at the request of Casillas' mother, according to Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the DA's Office. She didn't know when he would make a decision.
Gibbons said another deputy DA decided on Oct. 4 not to file charges on the girlfriend.
Casillas' girlfriend couldn't be reached for comment on Thursday. Phones numbers listed under her name have been disconnected.
The 29-year-old Casillas was stabbed in the early morning hours of Nov. 27, 2009 in an apartment in the 14300 block of Mulberry Drive. The complex is in the unincorporated county area.
Casillas, his girlfriend and her 5-year-old daughter were the only people in the apartment, according to investigators.
Sheriff's Lt. Dave Dolson said the couple argued and Casillas assaulted the girlfriend with some household object.
He said there was a physical altercation between the two. At some point, he said the couple fought over a steak knife and Casillas ended up getting stabbed once in the chest.
Casillas died at UC Irvine Medical Center.
In a 2009 interview, Casillas' mother, Melinda, denied her son had been drinking that day.

children were at her apartment on Nov. 26 which is in the same complex. She said they had an early dinner and he took his children home.
He returned to his mother's apartment, watched a movie then went to his apartment about 10:30 p.m. on Nov. 26.
She got a call from his girlfriend early the next morning telling her Casillas was bleeding and needed to be taken to a hospital.

(NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
