DOOMS — The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office reported that a man killed his common-law wife Monday at their home on Sandy Ridge Road in Dooms before turning the gun on himself.
Both were 47 years old, according to Investigator Brian Jenkins of the sheriff’s office. The couple had been together for about 20 years, he said.
Jenkins said a co-worker of the deceased woman became concerned Monday after she failed to show for work, and said she contacted the sheriff’s office about a welfare check.
Jenkins said the woman’s body was found on a couch inside a mobile home at 336 Sandy Ridge Road. In a chair next to the couch, authorities found the body of her partner.
“The investigation revealed she was asleep on the couch and he shot her once. Then he utilized the weapon on himself,” Jenkins said.
Both were shot in the head with a rifle.
The unidentified man and woman were last seen alive late Saturday night. Jenkins said authorities had not been called to the home in the past for any domestic problems, but said the investigation into the murder-suicide revealed the couple was “going through some issues.”
The sheriff’s office has refused to release the name of the alleged shooter.
“We don’t release suicide names,” said Capt. Hanger.
Both bodies have been sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for autopsies
