In Virginia Beach a man is charged with killing his girlfriend in a motel room.
Police say the suspect, James Woods, called and reported the shooting to police.
Red evidence tape marks the room at the Red Carpet Inn where the shooting took place.
Police arrived at the motel, located on Diamond Springs Road, shortly after midnight after getting a call about the shooting.
It was there that they found 48-year-old Barbara Ann Nave with a gunshot wound - she was pronounced dead on the scene.
Police say her boyfriend, 50-year-old James Ralph Woods, was the one who shot and killed her.
He was also the one who called 911.
Police arrested him at the scene.
NewsChannel 3 spoke with Woods' father off-camera. He says the couple had dated about a year, then Woods moved into the motel with his girlfriend about two months ago.
He also says that Woods had a drinking problem that has gotten him in trouble with the law before.
He says he was just in jail recently for a DWI.
Now he is back in jail, held without bond on charges of murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
"That's terrible really, that's really bad, really bad," said Carlton Smith, who lives at the motel.
Smith has lived at the motel for about ten months. He says he had seen Woods a few times and news of the shooting comes as a shock.
"It's surprising me, because we don't hear about like that around here, you know, shootings like that, no."
Woods declined the request for an interview.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
