LOS LUNAS, N.M. -- Joe Easley was sentenced to 19 years in prison Wednesday for the April 2009 murder of Sandra Sanchez.
Easley was convicted of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence and firearm enhancement.
Sanchez was reported missing by family members to Corrales police on April 14, 2009.
On June 2, 2009, authorities found her car at the MCM Elegante Hotel in Albuquerque.
A few days later, three hikers discovered Sanchez's dead body in a remote area of Socorro Canyon.
Easley was Sanchez's boyfriend at the time of her death.
"I commend Judge Pope for taking a hard line stance against this horrific violent crime and imposing the maximum penalty under the law. Judge Pope is sending a strong message to future potential offenders of domestic violence that this type of crime will not be tolerated in Valencia County," Los Lunas Police Department Chief Roy Melnick said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family members of Sandra Sanchez."
