SEAL BEACH, Calif., Nov. 23 (UPI) -- California prosecutors said they charged an 88-year-old man with first-degree murder for allegedly shooting his ailing wife to death at a nursing home.
The charges announced Tuesday against Roy Laird of Seal Beach included a sentencing enhancement for using a firearm in the Sunday slaying of his 86-year-old wife, Clara.
The Orange County District Attorney's office said in a written statement that Laird faced life in prison and that state law required a mandatory $1 million bail.
Clara Laird, who suffered from late-stage dementia and required round-the-clock care, was shot to death in her bed. Her husband of 69 years was arrested without incident by Seal Beach police, who responded to a 911 call placed by staff members.
