PUTNAM COUNTY -- The husband of a Monterey woman found dead in their home in August was arrested today and charged with her murder.
Christopher Rodger Lewis, 35, of Jim Garrett Road, Monterey, was served today with an indictment issued by the Putnam grand jury charging him with second degree murder in the case, according to the Putnam Sheriff's Department.
It was Sunday, August 1, when authorities learned that Amy Mayberry Lewis, 34, had been found dead in the couple's home. Investigators said at the time that Chris Lewis found his wife's body on the floor of a bedroom in their home. They said he went to his mother's home, which is next door, and his mother called 911.
Because the home is near the Cumberland County line, the call first went to authorities in that county, and deputies from there responded, then notified the Putnam Sheriff's Department.
Putnam Sheriff's detectives thought the death looked suspicious and they began an intense investigation, but they were unable to interview Chris Lewis because they could not locate him. When they did make contact with him, he was already represented by a lawyer.
The couple's four children were not home at the time of their mother's death. They had been visiting with relatives in another county.
The body was sent for an autopsy, but the results of that have not been disclosed. Detective Golden presented evidence in the case to the Putnam grand jury yesterday, and after the grand jury issued an indictment for second degree murder, Lewis was notified and he came to the Putnam jail and turned himself in, officials said. He was accompanied by attorney Randy Chaffin.
His bond was set at $200,000, and he is to be arraigned in Criminal Court on Nov. 16.
