Police arrested a Lakeland man on Friday on charges that he killed his girlfriend, who had been reported missing and was found dead this week.
On Monday, police said they found what they believe to be the remains of 44-year-old Virginia Frances Varnum. Varnum was reported missing Oct. 21, after police went to her home to check on her at the request of family and were unable to locate her.
Investigators say the remains were found behind a business on New Tampa Highway in Lakeland, in "close proximity" to the apartment where Varnum lived with her boyfriend, 36-year-old Monday Demarsh.
Demarsh was arrested Friday in Thomasville, Ga., on second degree murder and dealing in stolen property charges.
Police said had they enlisted the help of the U.S. Marshall's Office and Georgia law enforcement to locate Demarsh and "monitor his movements" as they investigated Varnum's death.
