GASTON, SC (WIS) - A Gaston man is dead after being shot late Sunday night with a high powered rifle. Lexington County deputies say the shooting may have been about a woman.
Major John Allard says 39-year old Stephen Swihart was shot and killed while standing outside a home on Fish Hatchery road shortly before midnight Sunday. Allard says they arrested 34-year old George Tronco, Jr, of West Columbia Monday and charged him with murder.
Investigators say Tronco shot Swihart with a 30.06 rifle one time in the chest. They say Swihart was kneeling down in a field when Tronco shot him from about 25 yards away. Swihart and his girlfriend, Stacy Phillips had just returned home with Phillips' three children
According to Allard, Phillips told investigators she and Tronco had a three year relationship but that it ended in August. She told investigators that Tronco never accepted that the relationship was over.
Investigators will test bullet casings found on the scene to determine if they match the rifle found at Tronco's home.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
