A Versailles man killed his wife then apparently turned the handgun on himself early Saturday, according to Woodford County Coroner Ron Owens, who was called to the double fatality at 183 Dunroven Drive.
Katie McDaniel Coomer, 28, a former cook at Holly Hill Inn, was found dead of a gunshot wound to the head, Owens said. Lying beside her in the hallway was her husband, Eric Coomer.
Their young children, Sara Jane Coomer and Seth Douglas Coomer, were sleeping in a back bedroom and taken out afterward unharmed, he said.
According to Owens, the Coomers had been grilling with Eric's father, Marty Coomer, when an argument began.
Owens said Marty Coomer was outside when he heard a gunshot. According to Marty Coomer's account, Eric Coomer said, "I shot her and I'm not going to prison for the rest of my life. Look here," and then he shot himself in the head, Owens said.
Alcohol is thought to have been involved. No charges have been filed. Woodford County officials said no report on the shootings was available Sunday.
Police had been called to the home at least once before because shots were fired, Owens said. He did not know the caliber of the gun involved, which was seized by police.
Services for Katie McDaniel Coomer will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Midway Cemetery. Clark Funeral Home in Versailles is in charge of arrangements.
Funeral arrangements for Eric Coomer are pending at Blackburn & Ward.
