Hessmer, LA: Hessmer man dead, girlfriend in critical condition following domestic dispute

HESSMER, La. — Authorities say 34-year-old Hessmer man is dead and his girlfriend is in critical condition after being shot in the face during a domestic incident.

Avoyelles Parish sheriff's deputies tell The Town Talk Dwayne E. Franks was found dead in his home and 26-year-old Michelle Lee was found with a gunshot wound in an adjacent yard after authorities responded to a call of a woman being shot around 6:50 a.m. Tuesday.

Franks, Lee's boyfriend, shot himself in the head with a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Investigators believe that Franks and Lee became involved in a domestic dispute that led to Franks shooting Lee, police said. Lee fled the home to a neighbor's house where she collapsed, officials said.

Lee was taken to Rapides Regional Medical Center.

Lee's two children, ages 8 and 11, were home during at the time of the shooting and were placed in the care of the Office of Community Services until family members were located.
