(WICHITA, Kan.)
Wendy Sheperd is accused of shooting her boyfriend, driving him to a Wichita hospital and shooting him again.
She's charged with first degree murder for killing Jose Vicente Galan Delgado on June 13. On Wednesday, she was in court for a preliminary hearing.
The state called two eyewitness who said they saw an SUV pull up to the emergency room of Via Christie Hospital on East Harry. They both testified that once they saw the car pull in, they heard a gun shot, and saw a man get pushed out of the car.
One of Sheperd's friends also testified saying she confessed to the crime. Christopher Reynolds said she told him that she shot him after an argument.
"She told me that she was getting beat up and he beat her up one last time," he said. "She got the gun from him and he got shot."
The prosecution said this sounds like self-defense. But Assistant District Attorney Aaron Breitenback said once she took Delgado to the hospital, she decided to kill him. He says because he was shot in the back of the head that it does not qualify as self defense.
Because this was only a preliminary hearing, the defense did not present any evidence.
Sheperd's case will go to trial on November 8.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
