A Solvang man, identified Monday as Harold F. Meyers, 43, was found dead in his home after a domestic dispute call Sunday evening in the Janin Acres neighborhood, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department.
The event unfolded after deputies were dispatched to the 2200 block of Sunrise Way at 6:24 p.m. Sunday for a report of a domestic disturbance. A man had reportedly threatened his wife with a handgun before she escaped from the couple’s home, the department said.
When deputies arrived they tried to contact the man, who they believed was still inside the house. After repeated attempts were unsuccessful, the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Team, its SWAT unit, was called to assist, and deputies sent out a Reverse 911 page to the homes in the immediate vicinity, warning them of the situation and directing people in those homes to stay indoors until the incident was resolved.
Members of SWAT and the Sheriff’s Hostage Negotiation Team made repeated attempts to contact the man, but he did not respond.
At 11:16 p.m., SWAT team members entered the home and found Meyers’ body. It appears he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, although the official cause and time of death will not be known until the coroner’s investigation is completed, sheriff’s officials said.
