St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office arrested a man Friday morning in connection with the 2009 death of his live-in girlfriend.
Kurt Dwayne Miller, 39, of Port Barre, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
On Dec. 19, Sheriff's deputies responded to a medical emergency at the 19100 block of La. 190 about a woman who had overdosed.
Miller had told police at the time that he found the woman, Laura Coates, was passed out on the floor. After reviving her, she passed out again and he decided to drive her to the hospital.
Miller was stopped by Port Barre Police and Acadian Ambulance was called to take over treatment and transportation.
The following day, Coates died at Opelousas General Hospital. Nurses told investigators they found bleeding on the brain and bruises on various parts of her body, which they believed were recent.
Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said in a news release that evidence collected at the scene the and autopsy results created enough probably cause to arrest Miller on second-degree murder.
Miller was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
