Atascadero, CA -- An Atascadero man who allegedly admitted to bludgeoning his wife to death with a hammer will stand trial. Judge Barry LaBarbera ruled Tuesday in a preliminary hearing that 67-year-old Kenneth Cockrell would face charges for the death of his 69-year-old wife Margaret. He has pleaded not guilty.
Cockrell was arrested on Easter Sunday 2008 after he calmly entered the Atascadero Police Department and said he killed his wife. Cockrell was initially found incompetent to stand trial and was treated in a state institution. In the spring, he was determined capable of understanding the charges against him, and criminal proceedings have resumed. Cockrell is scheduled for further arraignment on September 14.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
