Green Bay Police are investigating the shooting death of a man by two Appleton police officers.
Authorities said 35-year-old Armando Aponte rushed at the officers while carrying two swords – and Lieutenant Carlos del Plaine and patrolman Joseph Lidbury fired several shots at him. Aponte died later at a hospital.
The incident occurred early Wednesday, Sept. 8, after police were called to a domestic dispute at Aponte’s duplex. Officers removed a woman and four children. And then Aponte reportedly went into the living room with two large swords and lunged at two officers, after ignoring an order to drop the weapons.
In the meantime, other officers were trying to figure out how to get a one-year-old baby out of the home.
Court records show that Aponte was convicted in domestic violence incidents in 2005-and-’07 – and one of them involved a dangerous weapon.
Appleton Police Chief David Walsh said it was the first time in 24 years that a city officer shot a person to death. He said he arranged for outside officers from Green Bay to investigate – and the probe should end today or tomorrow.
