A husband and wife are dead following an apparent murder-suicide.
Jackie Clemmens, 43, of Hallyburton Road off N.C. 18 N., called 911 around 4 a.m. Sunday and reported he accidently shot and killed his wife, Irene Clemmens, 39, according to Detective Lt. Rodney Norman with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s deputies responded to the residence and found Irene Clemmens dead in the bedroom with a single gunshot wound to her chest.
Jackie Clemmens was not in the residence. Norman said he had gone to the nearby Antioch Food Mart and used a payphone to call 911.
Detectives were called to investigate and because they didn’t know where Jackie Clemmens was, they waited until daybreak to start their work in earnest.
Officers had information that Jackie Clemmens had made threats in the past that he would harm law enforcement, Norman said.
They eventually located Jackie Clemmens on N.C. 18 N. and when they encountered him, Norman said he had a shotgun in his hands.
Officers ordered Jackie Clemmens to drop the weapon.
He instead turned it on himself and shot himself in the chest, Norman said.
The incident happened in the roadway and blocked a lane of traffic on N.C. 18 until the scene could be cleared.
Norman said deputies have responded to the Clemmens’ residence before for domestic disputes including as recent as last month.
Irene Clemmens also had taken a domestic violence restraining order out on her husband but it had expired.
Norman believes the two were back together but wasn’t sure of their living arrangements.
