STOCKTON - A 20-year-old woman accused of fatally shooting her child's father appeared in court Friday on a list of charges that included premeditated murder and street terrorism.
Police said Yadira Amaya-Cortez shot 37-year-old George Sinkfield in the back of the head at an apartment complex in the 5400 block of Carrington Circle on April 21.
Sinkfield, who was still conscious when police arrived, identified Amaya-Cortez as his girlfriend. He said she shot him inside the apartment.
Amaya-Cortez had fled the scene by the time police responded but also made a 911 report within minutes. She told her own version of the story in court documents.
Amaya-Cortez told a 911 operator she needed help because she shot someone in self-defense.
Court documents say the woman's sister then got on the phone and told the operator Amaya-Cortez had been kidnapped off the street, beaten and raped.
The sister said that, according to Amaya-Cortez, the man pulled out a gun and she took the weapon and shot him.
Amaya-Cortez was subsequently taken to the police station for an interview.
Sinkfield died two days later. He had been struck by bullets multiple times.
Amaya-Cortez and Sinkfield have a child together.
She appeared only briefly in court Friday. Her arraignment was continued until next Friday.
More details will surface at a preliminary hearing, where a San Joaquin County Superior Court judge will decide whether to try the defendant after hearing witness testimony.
Amaya-Cortez is being held at San Joaquin County Jail without bail.
