ELMWOOD PARK — Jurors at the trial of a Bergen County woman accused of suffocating her ailing husband and trying to do the same to her two children must consider whether she was greedy or insane.
Lawyers laid out the arguments during opening statements at Jenny Tran's trial Thursday in Hackensack.
A Bergen County prosecutor told jurors Tran regarded Minh Trung Tran as a financial burden after he suffered a stroke.
The Record of Woodland Park reports defense lawyer Brian Neery told jurors the 51-year-old Elmwood Park resident's plan was to kill her family and herself so they could "go to a better world."
She faces up to life in prison if convicted in the 2009 slaying or confinement in a psychiatric facility if found not guilty by reason of insanity.
The trial resumes on Tuesday.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
