“I killed Rita.’’
As cops arrested him, the ex-boyfriend of a beautiful college student admitted to leaving her slashed to death on her new lover’s bed — announcing, “I killed Rita” — according to a one-sentence excerpt from his confession made public yesterday.
The chilling admission to the slaying of Rita Morelli, 36, was released yesterday as the suspect, Bakary Camara, 41, pleaded not guilty to murder from his hospital bed in Bellevue.
Camara, a citizen of Senegal, has remained hospitalized since his dramatic arrest three weeks ago.
He stabbed himself in the stomach when cops came to his Bronx apartment a week after the murder.
He also directed cops to a rambling note in which he detailed a failed relationship with the Borough of Manhattan Community College student and blamed the slaying on his having suffered a voodoo curse, officials said.
A Manhattan Supreme Court judge ordered Camara to undergo a psychiatric exam, as requested by his lawyer, Seema Iyer.
Cops had tracked him down via an anonymous 911 call he’d made the day of the murder, reporting “a dead body” at Morelli’s East 120th Street address.

(NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
