JOLIET — A man has been charged with murder for allegedly stabbing a man during a domestic dispute early Thursday.
About 2 a.m., Christian Parra-Rivera, 25, was arguing with his ex-girlfriend in his apartment at 517 Garnsey Avenue, Cmdr. Brian Benton said. The couple, who have two children together, had been together for eight years before breaking things off a few months ago.
During the fight, Parra-Rivera refused to let her leave the apartment, Benton said. So, she called her sister who then called four male friends to come to the house, Benton said.
Among that group was Alfonso Diaz, 31.
With Diaz and the other men reportedly waiting in the front yard, Parra-Rivera allegedly told the woman he didn’t care who came over until things got resolved between them. Benton said witnesses told police Parra-Rivera was carrying a pocketknife when he walked out of the house.
“The men began arguing and that escalated into a physical fight between Parra-Rivera, Diaz and at least one other man,” Benton said.
Parra-Rivera reportedly knocked one man down before he was punched in the head and ribs, while his former girlfriend’s sister was cut on the hand.
Meanwhile, Diaz was stabbed in his left thigh and right shoulder blade and was cut on his right arm before he collapsed.
“Everyone remained at the scene and called 911,” Benton said. “Officers arrived within moments and found Parra-Rivera standing near the victim without a shirt on and blood on his chest.”
Diaz was taken to Silver Cross Hospital, but died in the emergency room at 2:51 a.m. An autopsy performed Thursday determined his death was caused by multiple stab wounds.
Parra-Rivera, both women and the other three men were brought to the police station and interviewed. Benton said all of them were cooperative with investigators.
Parra-Rivera was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of battery and booked into the county jail.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
