A Santa Ana man who allegedly shot his wife and attempted to commit suicide was suffering from financial distress, according to Santa Ana police.

Michael Eugene Upton, 57, is being held without bail on suspicion of killing his wife, said Cpl. Anthony Bertanga.

Upton called Santa Ana police Wednesday morning and reported that he shot a woman in his apartment on the 1100 block of West Stevens Avenue, Bertanga said.

Police found the body of Upton's wife, Melva Laverne Upton, 57, who died from an apparent gunshot wound.

Upton told police he had taken several pills in an attempted suicide, Bertanga said. After he was released from the hospital, police questioned him. Upton revealed that both he and his wife were out of work and savings and were facing eviction from their apartment.

"The story he told was that he and his wife had discussed this and that this was their best option," Bertanga said.
