A Garfield Park man succumbed to his injuries suffered earlier this month when his girlfriend allegedly doused him in gasoline and lit him on fire.
Allen Penny, 61, of the 3100 block of West Washington Boulevard has died after his girlfriend allegedly lit him on fire July 2 after he refused to give her money, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Lisa Baywood, 42, set her boyfriend on fire in the first-floor apartment the on-and-off couple shared in the 3100 block of Washington Boulevard, assistant state’s attorney Lorraine Scaduto said at her bond hearing earlier this month.
Baywood, who is also known as Sherry Ann Hartison and Lisa Hartison, was charged with attempted murder, aggravated arson, heinous battery and aggravated domestic battery.
Baywood, who has been previously convicted of prostitution, had just come home at 3 a.m. on July 2 after “working the streets” when she attacked her boyfriend who used a cane to walk, Scaduto said.
Baywood told authorities she expected her boyfriend to give her $150 to $200 from his monthly retirement and disability checks so she could pay her phone bill and buy other items, Scaduto said.
But the man would “play games” with her and refused to give her the money in a lump sum, angering her, Scaduto said.
Sixty-five percent of Penny’s body was burned, Scaduto said. Penny died from his injuries at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
It was unknown if Baywood would face upgraded charges for Penny’s death, police said.
