A Spokane Valley woman who police believe was shot by her ex-fiance early Sunday was a “whirlwind” who could make a room come alive by her presence, a close relative said today.
Rebecca Schiering’s family held a press conference this afternoon to mourn her death, as well as that of her 9-year-old son, Phillip Schiering.
Bonnie Bickler, Rebecca’s aunt and godmother, said a fund has been established to benefit the surviving children at United Health Services Credit Union, 613 S Washington.
Police suspect both were shot by Rebecca Schiering’s ex-fiance, 39-year-old Jan DeMeerleer.
Also injured in the attack was Rebecca’s 17-year-old son, who told police he awoke to DeMeerleer trying to slash his throat.
Phillip Schiering’s twin brother, who is autistic, was unharmed. Relatives said today he is in the care of family members.
Phillip Schiering was declared brain dead at 5:45 p.m. Sunday at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, a spokeswoman said today. The boy had been on life support after an attack at his mother’s home at 622 N. Ella Road early Sunday.
DeMeerleer, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot in the garage of his home in the 8300 block of East Brant Lane.
