A 53-year-old man was shot to death early Tuesday while he slept and his wife is in custody, being questioned by investigators, Sheriff Todd Entrekin said.

Joel David Kutschenreuter was found dead inside his home at 148 Clay Drive, just outside Hokes Bluff in the Ball Play community.

Kutschenreuter’s son called 911 about 5:40 a.m. Tuesday after he came home from working a third-shift job and discovered his father’s body.

Kutschenreuter apparently was shot three times while lying in bed, Entrekin said.

“It appears that he was asleep at the time,” the sheriff said.

Entrekin said it is believed that Kutchenreuter was shot sometime about 4 a.m.

A 911 call from a cell phone was received about 4:30 a.m., but dispatchers could not understand the caller and get any information before the caller hung up.

That call was made from Kutschenreuter’s wife’s cell phone, Entrekin said.

She was taken to the hospital because of her condition and was taken into custody after she was released from the hospital.

Carlotta Susann Kutschenreuter is listed in the Etowah County jail log and is being held pending charges.

A motive has not yet been determined, but she is expected to be charged today, Entrekin said.

While responding to the call, sheriff’s office investigator Fred Lasseter was involved in a wreck on Beaird Road, not far from the location of the homicide investigation.

Lasseter was driving the county-owned 2007 Ford Crown Victoria assigned to him when the wreck happened just before 6:30 a.m., according to the Alabama State Troopers.

“Investigator Lasseter was responding to the homicide today, when his vehicle left the road and he over corrected resulting in the accident,” Entrekin said.

The car hit a tree and was totaled.

Lasseter was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released.
