Gilbert police on Monday were investigating an apparent murder-suicide involving a Chandler couple.

A maid found Cynthia Townley, 32, shot to death Sunday in a southeast Gilbert hotel room. On Monday morning, her boyfriend, Christopher Harbinson, 36, was found shot to death in his backyard in Chandler.

Sgt. Mark Marino, a Gilbert police spokesman, said the slayings appeared to be the result of a murder-suicide but that detectives needed to continue their investigation to prove that, based on forensics and other factors.

"We're trying to find out why these actions occurred, what was going on in their relationship," he said. "This is a senseless loss."

He said Townley and Harbinson were Chandler residents but were not living together.

Marino said Townley and her boyfriend checked into the Hampton Inn, 3265 S. Market St., about a week ago. Police were called about 3:30 p.m. Sunday when the maid found Townley dead.

Detectives believe Townley was shot to death sometime between Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, Marino said.

The investigation of Townley's slaying led police to a house near Cooper and Queen Creek roads, where detectives found the boyfriend dead early Monday morning of what police said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the 2300 block of East Indigo, he said. Police were not searching for any additional suspects Monday.
