In Newport News witnesses tell police the couple who died were in the process of ending their relationship.

The boyfriend is the one who pulled the trigger.

It happened Sunday night on Water's Edge Drive.

Deborah Martin was enjoying a quiet Fourth of July in her Newport News apartment when she heard a loud noise outside.

"I heard the shots going off, assuming it was the kids over here shooting off fireworks," Martin said.

But it was far worse - a murder-suicide.

Police say 26-year-old Mark Adoremos shot his girlfriend Jasmine Williams around 8:40 p.m. Sunday night.

He then turned the gun on himself.

"I walked down a little ways and I saw a body laying on the platform," Martin said.

Witnesses say that Adoremos was waiting for Williams as she visited a friend across the street. Her body was found on the first floor foyer.

"The girl, she had moved her and that's when I had seen she was shot in the head," said Stephanie Ware, neighbor.

Immediately after the shooting neighbors worried that Adoremos was on the run, but police later found his body on the second floor.

Neighbors say the two had been having trouble in their relationship.

"She was breaking up with him because he didn't work and she was tired of carrying him through life," Martin said.

Neighbors describe 22-year-old Williams as friendly and personable. They were shocked to hear of the violence that had hit their Water's Edge Drive Apartment Complex.

"It's still unexpected because we're right across the street from City Center. So you wouldn't think it would happen here," said Ware.

Police spent the night examining and cleaning the scene.

A faint stain reminds neighbors of the crime.
