FAIRBANKS - A Fort Wainwright soldier is in military custody in connection with the death of his wife.
U.S Army officials on Monday said no charges had been filed and the case is under investigation by the Criminal Investigation Command.
The name of the dead woman and the soldier were not released, pending notification of the next of kin, Army officials said.
The soldier showed up at the Fairbanks police station on Cushman Street at 11:22 p.m. Sunday and told officers his wife was dead at home, according to Fairbanks police log notes.
Officers asked the soldier what happened. He said he wanted to speak to his lawyer before talking to police. The soldier gave officers permission to search the home.
Fairbanks police notified the military police at Fort Wainwright. They entered the residence and found the body of the woman in the bedroom.
Spc. Aaron M. Rentfrow, 30, originally from Fort Wayne, Ind., has been incarcerated at the Fairbanks Correctional Center since shortly after he showed up at the Fairbanks police station Sunday night and told officers his wife was dead at his home on post.
The Army has identified his wife as Tonya Lynn Rentfrow, 31, originally from Conway, Ark.
