Santa Fe Police believe the gun used to kill a teenager at a mall parking lot Thursday, is a state police issued weapon. Late Friday afternoon, police confirmed the boy's stepfather is a New Mexico State Police officer.

Santa Fe police say 16-year-old Michael Trujillo shot and killed 18-year-old Chris Aguayo in the parking lot of the Santa Fe Place mall. Police explained Trujillo was mad at Aguayo because Aguayo had been talking to Trujillo's 15-year-old girlfriend. Police say Aguayo and Trujillo met each other in the parking lot.

"Both exited the vehicles and began to accost one another about communication with the female, the 15-year-old female, and it escalated to the point where the suspect produced a gun, " said Detective Louis Carlos.

According to Police, Trujillo shot Aguayo several times. Aguayo died at an area hospital a few hours later.

Trujillo was arrested a few hours after the shooting and charged with murder. Police believe Trujillo took the gun from his home. The serial number on the gun used in the shooting matches the officer's police-issued weapon. Santa Fe Police haven't said if the boy's stepfather will face any charges in the case. State police would only say they are cooperating with the investigation.
