A Pine Bluff man was in the Crossett City Jail on Monday afternoon facing a preliminary charge of second degree murder in connection with a shooting death on South Main in Crossett at mid-afternoon Monday.

Crossett Police Chief Tommy Sturgeon said late Monday afternoon that officers received a call at 2:50 p.m. Monday that there had been a shooting on West Eighth and that a man was running away from the scene. The chief said that officers found Demontrius Webb, 31, had been shot, but asked that the location of where the shot hit him not be revealed. The chief said that while Webb lived in Crossett, he did not have a specific address as of Monday afternoon.

Webb was transported to the Ashley County Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.

About 30 minutes after the shooting, officers arrested Antonio Robinson, 36, of Pine Bluff at 805 South Main Street. Again, the police had not had time to determine Robinson's actual address The police chief said that a .38 caliber revolver, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered at an abandoned house on Ninth Avenue.

Chief Sturgeon said that officers believe that only one shot was fired, and there is no evidence that Webb was armed.

As of 6 p.m. Monday, officers were interviewing Robinson. The police chief said that he is being held on a preliminary charge of second degree murder. His first appearance in court will be on Wednesday.

While the investigation was continuing, the chief said that the preliminary reason for the conflict between the two seems to have been a domestic dispute. He said the evidence indicates that the two were fighting over or because of an ex-girlfriend.
