DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Daytona Beach police officer whose girlfriend used his department issued weapon to commit suicide is still the subject of an internal investigation, but the police chief tells WESH 2 News he's all but cleared of any wrongdoing.
Officer Chris Reeder was in the shower last February when he heard the gun go off and found girlfriend Cathryn Moore dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said at the time.
The Daytona Beach Police Department asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to look into the circumstances surrounding the death, but Daytona Beach Police Chief Mike Chitwood said DNA evidence on the weapon suggests the shooting was just a tragic accident.
The FDLE investigation is still not complete.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
