The family of a pregnant Henderson County woman whose body was found dumped along the Blue Ridge Parkway in Asheville in October 2009 spoke out this morning following the first court appearance of the man charged with murder.

Jermaine Deprie Glover, who is accused of killing Misty Lynn Carter, was arrested and booked into the Henderson County Detention Center on Thursday night, where he is being held without bond.

Glover had a first appearance in District Court Friday.

"Misty was a fun child," Tammy Pace, Carter's mother said Friday morning. "She was into dance, she was an outside person and she had her own personality."

When the family got word that after 10 months of investigation, Glover would be arrested and charged with first-degree murder, they were shocked and happy someone was being charged in their loved one's gruesome murder.

"I didn't know what to do," Carter's sister, Crystal Branson, said. "I dropped everything I was doing and called the family."

Branson said she would settle for a trial but doesn't want to see a plea bargain in the case.

"My sister didn't get a chance," Branson said. "He should be held accountable."

Branson said she wasn't surprised that Glover was the suspect.

"They met through a neighbor of ours," she said. "He just wasn't my sister's type. She liked clean cut men, and he was much older than her."

The family said that Glover is not the father of the baby Carter was carrying when she was murdered.

Branson said she thought it was odd when Glover never showed up for the funeral for his girlfriend.

"He gave himself away," she said.

Branson said her sister was the type of person who could turn a sad situation into something positive.

"She was a comedian," she said. "Now when my mom and dad are gone, I will be left alone, just with my children. I will be the only one left because my sister is gone."

Carter's body was found at 6:32 a.m. Oct. 19, 2009, near mile marker 395 on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Buncombe County.

Sheriff's investigators linked Glover, Carter's boyfriend, to the death, Capt. Steve Carter said in a news release issued Thursday night. He said the arrest came after an “extensive collaborative effort with the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office and the State Bureau of Investigation.”

Glover and Carter lived at 52 Piney Ridge Court in Hendersonville, Carter said.

Carter was killed by blunt force trauma to the head, according to an autopsy report.

Major findings of the autopsy included the discovery of chop wounds to the head. Medical examiners also found burns to her head, upper chest and left upper extremity. After examination, it was determined that Carter was not alive at the time she was set on fire.

It was also confirmed that Carter was about five to six weeks pregnant at the time of her death. No defensive injuries were present on Carter's arms or hands.

According to investigative reports, Carter was found naked with a singed sheet wrapped around her head. She was later identified by her sister based on tattoos and scars.

There will be no other details released regarding the specifics to the investigation, Capt. Carter said in the release.

Investigators said that in July they suspected foul play. Originally the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office was the lead agency for the investigation, but it was later taken over by Henderson County after a person of interest had been established and it was believed the death occurred in Henderson County. Henderson County Sheriff's Office Capt. Jerry Rice confirmed in July that investigators had a person of interest, but no charges had been filed.

Rice said then the Sheriff's Office was waiting on lab results to proceed with the case.
