MESA, AZ - A Mesa man is accused of shooting his girlfriend to death, after earlier telling officers she committed suicide.
Police spokesman, Steve Berry, said they received an unknown trouble call at 9:42 Friday morning. Once officers arrived at the scene, near McKellips and Mesa Drive, they found a woman with a gunshot wound.
The 20-year-old woman, later identified as Sheila Schurz, was taken to the hospital where she died.
The woman's 21-year-old boyfriend, Bernardo Barrazo, told police she committed suicide.
However, once investigators got a better look at the victim's wounds, they questioned the boyfriend's story. Barraza then admitted he accidentally shot his girlfriend.
Barraza told police the two of them had been arguing about a new gun he had purchased. Officers say he took the weapon from Schurz and said he was an expert at handling a gun and was showing her, when the weapon discharged, hitting her.
Barraza is being charged with 2nd degree murder.
Police said the two have children from separate relationships and those children were not home at the time.
