A man who intervened in an argument in front of his home late Tuesday was fatally stabbed by another man who initially ran off but returned with a butcher knife.

Wyatt H. Brower, 44, died after the 10:20 p.m. incident in the 1300 block of W. Fifth St., said Wilmington police Master Sgt. Steven Barnes.

Police found Brower inside the house, suffering from a stab wound to his left abdomen.

New Castle County paramedics treated him on the scene and took him to Christiana Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m., less than an hour after the incident.

A 17-year-old New Castle girl was arguing with a 23-year-old man outside the victim's home, Barnes said.

The man, later identified by police as Omaire Clark of the first block of Gill Drive east of Newark, was described as the teen's ex-boyfriend.

At some point during the argument, Brower walked out of the house and tried to break up the fight, saying he was going to call police.

Clark left and came back several minutes later with a large kitchen knife, Barnes said.

He said Clark's mother lives nearby and he got the knife from her home.

When he returned, Clark charged at Brower with the knife and stabbed him in the left torso, Barnes said.

He said Clark then drove off in a dark-colored car.

Clark continued to text his estranged girlfriend on her cell phone after he fled, Barnes said. Investigators were able to trace the cell phone to Elkton, Md.

Shortly after midnight, Clark was arrested by Wilmington and Elkton police.

He is being held in the Cecil County jail pending extradition to Delaware.

The incident marked the third fatal stabbing in the city this year. Another nine slayings were by gunfire.
