The ex-boyfriend of a woman who was shot to death while in bed Friday morning was captured that night at a Texas motel.

Gregory Carter, 19, was charged with first-degree murder after Derhyan "Cookie" Sherman, 21, was killed Friday.

Police thought he might have fled Oklahoma after the homicide, and police in Marshall, Texas, found him at a Super 8 motel and took him into custody, Tulsa Police Officer Jason Willingham said Friday night.

Tulsa officers had gone to the Addison Apartments, 10145 E. Admiral Blvd., about 8:40 a.m. after a screaming woman called 911, Sgt. Ron Kawano said.

When police arrived, they found Sherman dead in a bedroom of a family member's apartment. Authorities allege that she was shot in the head by Carter as she lay in bed.

Other people were at the residence at the time, but no other injuries were reported.

Managers at the apartment complex wouldn't comment and told journalists to leave the property. Meanwhile, a small crowd of onlookers watched as police investigated.

Witnesses were cooperative with investigators and helped police develop a suspect, Kawano said.

Officers searched a nearby apartment complex for Carter, but he was not there.

Kawano said Carter has ties to Louisiana and that detectives thought he might have been traveling there in a blue Buick Century. Their notification of out-of-state law enforcement agencies led to his arrest in Texas.

The slaying is Tulsa's 27th of the year.
