TROY, Ohio -- New details obtained through financial records and a search warrant affidavit are giving police an insight into the life and troubles of Jeff Bedinger--the 51-year-old Dayton man charged with the shooting death of his stepson and the kidnapping of his 7-year-old son during his nearly 48 hour crime spree that began last Thursday.
Bedinger was arrested Friday night when he crashed his car on Wilmington Pike at the intersection of Briggs Road following a chase with local sheriff's deputies.
The new documents reveal that Bedinger's life was in shambles just before he snapped last week.
Authorities say that Bedinger and his wife had been having troubles: first, a bankruptcy filing in late May, citing nearly $200,000 in debt.
Then Bedinger's wife, Kimberly, moved out of the couple's Shroyer home a few weeks ago and into an apartment in Troy with their 7-year-old son Zane and Kimberly's son from another marriage, 22-year-old Brandon Haskins.
The couple was trying to work their problems out though.
Kimberly Bedinger told police that the couple had just seen a marriage counselor on Thursday afternoon--Jeff Bedinger snapped hours later.
First, he threatened his wife's life with a 9mm handgun that he pulled from a backpack at her Troy apartment.
A search warrant says that then Bedinger shot his step son, Haskins, at least seven times before grabbing his son Zane and the family dog and disappearing.
Zane turned up in Indianapolis later that night but for the next 24 hours, police searched nationwide for Bedinger until a Montgomery County sheriff's deputy spotted his car in the Miami Valley on Social Row Road in Sugarcreek Township.
The deputy stopped him after a brief chase and ordered Bedinger out of his car at gunpoint. Bedinger then allegedly drove off, starting an 8-minute car chase that reached speeds of 70 mph until he caused a three car crash on Wilmington Pike in Centerville that netted his arrest.
Bedinger admitted to a deputy after the crash that he shot his stepson on Thursday.
Bedinger will be arraigned Monday morning on felony charges of aggravated murder, kidnapping, and abduction. He is being held without bond in the Miami County Jail.
