SANTA ROSA BEACH — William Aldrich, a 55-year-old Santa Rosa Beach man arrested Sunday afternoon on charges of domestic battery, apparently killed himself in a South Walton County holding cell.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating Aldrich’s death.

It listed a preliminary cause of death as self-inflicted asphyxiation but was awaiting official results of an autopsy conducted Monday.

Aldrich was arrested shortly before 4 p.m. and was being housed in the holding cell until he could be taken to Walton County Jail.

A deputy at the holding cell in Santa Rosa Beach discovered he wasn't breathing when he went to check on him at 7:22 p.m.

The officer called for backup and started CPR, according to a Walton County Sheriff's Office press release. Other deputies assisted in attempting to revive Aldrich until EMS arrived.

The report compiled by deputies on the scene of Aldrich’s arrest states his wife came home from church to find him “sitting on the couch, very angry, drinking a beer.”

One officer reported that Aldrich’s wife said he was mad at her for attending the church service.

Deputies reported the wife told them Aldrich “choked her so hard until she couldn’t breathe.”

An arrest report filed with the incident report does not indicate that Aldrich resisted being taken into custody or that he suffered any kind of injuries during the domestic altercation.

There is nothing in either report to indicate he attempted to hurt himself or was showing any type of suicidal tendencies before being placed in the holding cell.
