Roanoke, VA: Police say shooting was murder-suicide

The shooting deaths of a man and woman whose bodies were found last month inside a Southeast Roanoke house have been ruled a murder-suicide, police said Thursday.
The female murder victim was Sondra Lovell, 78, according to her ex-husband, Ed Lovell, who said he has talked with police.

He said that she lived in the Rosewalk Lane house with her son, John David Dunn III, 42, who suffered from fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by musculoskeletal pain.

Ed Lovell said Thursday he did not know the identity of the male victim.

Police would not release the identity of either victim. The medical examiner's office is working to identify the woman, according to a statement from police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson. The statement did not include information about the male's identity, and Johnson did not immediately respond to questions.

Officers were called to the house to check the well-being of residents on June 17 and discovered the bodies.

An autopsy and the police investigation determined that the male victim shot the woman and then turned the gun on himself, Johnson said in Thursday's statement.
