Medina, OH: Medina man charged in wife's death

MEDINA, Ohio - A Medina County man is now behind bars accused of killing his wife.

When 60-year-old Dennis Auerswald took his wife to the hospital 16 months ago, he said he found her unresponsive with an alcohol bottle. Now, he has been charged with aggravated murder, murder and forgery.

Police wouldn’t say how they thought Auerswald killed his wife, but the search warrant affidavit said Maureen Auerswald had antifreeze in her system and that’s why her organs failed.

Medina police said Dennis Auerswald took his wife to Medina General Hospital in February 2009. The 60-year-old woman was completely unresponsive.

“He claimed he had found her with an unopened bottle of alcohol,” Medina Mayor Dennis Hanwell said. He was the police chief at the time. “Her condition worsened… She was taken in, in the evening hours. She passed away the following morning.”

Hanwell said Auerswald’s story about the vodka just didn't add up and doctor's described him as "lax" about his dying wife.

“The doctor at our local ER thought is was suspicious, both his reaction to what was going on, his explanation as to what was going on, as well as her condition,” Hanwell said.

Police searched Auerswald’s home twice after Maureen’s death.

Auerswalk was charged in 2008 with domestic violence against his wife. The affidavit reported a friend in California had called Medina police worrying about Maureen.
