The Limestone County Sheriff's Department has released new information on a shocking apparent murder/suicide in the Reid Community last weekend.

According to Sheriff Mike Blakely, the incident is all the end result of a child custody dispute between an estranged couple.

The incident happened at home on Huntsville-Brownsferry Road around 1:21 a.m. Sunday. It all began with someone banging on a couple's back door. When the home owner got up to investigate, he was shot in the head with a 12 gauge shot gun by the intruder. The suspect then shot the man twice more after he fell to the ground. The gunman fled and the home owner's girlfriend called 911. The victim has now been identified as 23 year old Clinton Douglas Edward Roberts.

While investigators were on the scene of the shooting, they got a call from Clements Fire Department paramedics, who were on the scene of a single car wreck on Snake Road near Poplar Creek. Sheriff Blakely says the driver of that car was found dead at the scene, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The driver's description matched the description of Roberts' killer, according to his girlfriend. Investigators have now identified that second gunshot victim as 23 year old Terrence Turneal Gilbert of Athens.

Further investigation indicates that Gilbert stole a shotgun from a relative earlier in the day, and that he threatened to hurt himself and others, including Clinton Roberts. Police say Gilbert had been dating Roberts' estranged wife, and the two were involved in a custody dispute.

The investigation into the deaths is ongoing.
