WILSON, N.C. - The ex-boyfriend of 23-year-old Courtney Ann Speight has been arrested in the young woman's death.
45-year-old Donald Ray Davis was arrested Friday without incident. He's charged with 1st degree Murder.
He's in the Wilson County Jail with no bond.
The Medical Examiner's Office confirmed Friday that it was Speight's body that a fisherman discovered in the Contentnea Creek near the 2200 block of Willow Springs Drive.
Courtney disappeared Saturday night. Her family says she left her Aunt and Uncle's house to check up on Davis. She told her cousin Davis threatened to kill himself because she broke up with him the day before. She never returned.
"She was the type of person that she always kept to herself and if anything went wrong she wouldnt tell anyone about it anyway because she knew how we would react," said Catherine Speight, Courtney's grandmother.
But when 9 On Your Side talked with Davis on the phone Wednesday, he said he never saw Courtney that night or threatened to kill himself.
The family doesn't want to point fingers but they tell me his behavior after she disappeared raised some red flags.
"I just dont get why hes just not doing anything. I just really think something is not right. Something is really not right, really not right," said Speight's sister, Tiffany.
The family says they found a $109,000 life insurance policy in the room Speight was staying in. It listed Davis as the beneficiary. They say Speight's car was found just a few blocks away from Davis' house.
The search for Speight may be over, but the quest for justice has just begun.
"How would you feel if it was your daughter, or your grandaughter or some relation. How would you feel? Youd be feeling the same way that I feel. I just want justice done."
There's no word yet on what caused Speight's death.
The family has set up a memorial fund in Courtney's memory to help cover expenses. Contact Timothy Thorne at (252)292-5733 for details.
We'll have more details as they become available
