CAHOKIA, Ill. -- Police say a 57-year-old Cahokia man shot and killed his wife and wounded his son before fleeing to Missouri.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports ( http://tinyurl.com/9zr3upp) that Ovie Sumpter is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, 53-year-old Tina Sumpter. He's also charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated battery with a firearm for allegedly shooting his 23-year-old son, Jason Sumpter.
Cahokia police called to the home around 5 a.m. Saturday found Tina Sumpter with a gunshot wound to the head. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Jason Sumpter was at a neighbor's house and told police he believed his father was headed for Missouri. Ovie Sumpter was stopped and arrested a short time later by police in Pevely, Mo.
Police haven't commented on a possible motive.
