INDIANAPOLIS -- A man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend and the beating couple with a boat oar killed himself after a standoff with police Wednesday, authorities said.
Officers were called to a home in the 3700 block of North Sadlier Drive just before 8 a.m. on a report of a domestic situation.
Courtney Sarver, 29, went to the home to confront his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend, Steven Tam, 35, as he went to work, police said.
Sarver shot Tam in the chest and beat him with a boat oar, police said.
When the woman, Kiona Leland, 39, came out to help Tam, Sarver also beat her with the oar, police said.
Both victims were taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where they were both listed in serious condition Wednesday afternoon.
Officers tracked Sarver to a home on Leone Drive, where he barricaded himself inside a garage and eventually took his own life, police said.
Indianapolis police spokesman Officer Mike Hewitt said the home is that of Sarver's new girlfriend.
"Detectives obtained search warrants for the residence. We considered sending in robots, but it was too cluttered to send (them) in. The SWAT team entered the residence and found the suspect," he said.
St. Lawrence Catholic School, at 46th Street and Shadeland Avenue, was locked down during the standoff
