Oklahoma City man guilty of murder
Jurors in the Oklahoma County case chose a life sentence for Mark Anthony Sanders, 24.
The victim was Ebony Howeth-Viney, 33, of Oklahoma City. Prosecutors said Sanders shot her in the head early Oct. 17, 2008, inside her car at the Petro Truck Stop because she decided to reconcile with her husband.
The two earlier had been at the Palm Tree Lounge. A witness said she saw Sanders with a white rose at the club and jokingly asked if it was for her. The witness said he responded that she wouldn't want it because that rose meant death. The rose was found later in the victim's car.
"His prophecy is fulfilled,” prosecutor Pam Kimbrough told jurors.
Sanders admitted to police the two argued but claimed she kicked him out of her car before she was shot. The evidence against him included gunshot residue found on his hands.
Also, jurors were shown a police recording of him sucking spots on his shirt in a police interview room when detectives weren't present. Prosecutors contend Sanders, who admitted to watching police shows like "CSI,” was trying to hide evidence.
Defense attorneys suggested during the trial that police arrested the wrong man, that a drug dealer actually was responsible for the shooting.
