Hernando, FL: CCSO investigating apparent murder-suicide

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide in Hernando.

The Sheriff's Office was called at 4 p.m. on Thursday about a a suicide threat at 3710 E. Elise Court (off State Road 200) in Hernando.

When deputies arrived on scene, they heard a shot, and found a man with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His body was discovered in an outbuilding on the property.

Because his wife was nowhere to be found, deputies were concerned about her safety, especially based on statements made a short time earlier to other family members by her now- deceased husband.

A grid search was initiated in the wooded area surrounding the couple’s home. Sheriff’s Office K-9 units tracked in the woods, while the helicopter searched from the air. Deputies inspected neighboring properties both on foot and on ATVs.

The woman’s body ultimately was found in a vacant mobile home not far from the residence. She also had suffered a single gunshot wound.

Kenon and Bertha Caldwell were 68 and 66, respectively. Family members have been notified.

Both bodies were transported to the medical examiner’s office in Leesburg for autopsy.

Detectives say their investigation is continuing into what is looking to be an apparent murder-suicide.
