A man died and a woman survived what Gainesville police said appeared to be a murder-suicide attempt early Tuesday. According to police, Michael Peterson, 33, of Gainesville, was pronounced dead at Shands at the University of Florida within hours of the 3:40 a.m. incident.
A woman found in a car with Peterson, Sabrina Young, 31, also of Gainesville, remained in critical condition but was expected to survive, said police Lt. Tim Hayes.
Police were dispatched after someone called to report hearing gunshots in the area of 200 Northwest Third Street and said a light-colored Crown Victoria was in the area.
One of the first officers to reach the area noticed a car matching the description and turned on its lights, Hayes said. The driver turned a corner and the vehicle came to a stop on the sidewalk on the west side of the Vault nightclub, at 238 W. University Ave.
Inside the car, police said they found Peterson in the driver's seat with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his temple. Young was in the passenger seat with two gunshot wounds. Both were taken to Shands.
Police said they also recovered a handgun that had apparently been used in the shootings.
"We understand that they (Peterson and Young) had previously dated, but we are investigating what their current relationship was," Hayes said.
