A Roswell man who crashed his car into his ex-girlfriend's apartment last year, then chased her around, stabbing and beating her, pleaded guilty to murder and other charges Thursday.
Calvin Myers, 38, will spend life in prison after his admission of guilt in the the death of Minka Grogran, said Yvette Brown, spokeswoman for Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard.
Grogran was 40 when she was killed while trying to get away from an enraged Myers. Brown said that on April 18, 2009, Myers drove his 1997 Chrysler Sebring, a convertible, through the front wall of Grogran's Streamside Drive apartment in Roswell. She ran, but he caught her, then stabbed her 16 times and beat her head with a landscaping rock.
Myers also tried to stab a man who was inside the apartment, but the man fled and called 911. Myers barricaded himself in the apartment but eventually surrendered to police. He initially said he was drunk and didn't recall everything he'd done, but he later admitted that he drove into the building and chased Grogran in a jealous rage, Brown said.
It wasn't the first confrontation between Myers and Grogran. A month before her death, police went to the apartment after a domestic dispute between the couple.
Myers pleaded guilty Thursday morning before Superior Court Judge Henry Newkirk to charges of murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony and criminal damage to property.
Prosecutors sought the death penalty, but agreed to life in prison in exchange for the guilty plea, Brown said, adding that Myers will be formally sentenced next week.
A compilation of daily news articles from around the United States about deaths (including both people and animals) that appear to occur in the context of a past or present intimate relationship, focusing on 2009-present. (NOTE: this blog is limited to incidents that appear in the media and are captured by our search terms. We recognize this is not an exhaustive portrayal of all deaths resulting from intimate violence.) When is society going to realize intimate violence makes victims of us all?
