Aug. 11--A man accused of fatally shooting a bystander in December 2008 was indicted Tuesday by a Muscogee County grand jury.

Ulysses Wiggins, 53, is accused of shooting 24-year-old Catherine Walker in the parking lot of an apartment building at 1410 Talbotton Road on Dec. 16, 2008, authorities said.

The shooting stemmed from an earlier encounter that night with his ex-girlfriend. Wiggins allegedly accosted the woman as she got into a car to leave the apartments where she'd been visiting people. He's accused of reaching into the car, grabbing her shirt and then choking her, witnesses said.

Others ran Wiggins off, but he returned 15 minutes later with a gun, Columbus Recorder's Court testimony revealed.

Wiggins approached those who had run him off, and they ran. His ex-girlfriend said she ducked into an apartment and then heard a shot. When she looked back, she saw Wiggins running away, she said.

One witness testified that he saw Wiggins point the gun at Walker and shoot her.

Walker claimed in court that he had a stick, not a gun, and that he ran from the area because he had drugs on him.

Wiggins was indicted on charges including murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
