Wilkes, NC: Couple found dead at home

A man and his wife were found deceased Friday evening in their home in the Clingman community.Wilkes Sheriff Chris Shew said James “Jim” Newton Felts Sr., 77, apparently shot his wife, Judith Roux Felts, 72, and then shot himself. Shew said the handgun that apparently was used was found near Felts.Wilkes Medical Examiner Terry Taylor said both died after being shot one time each. He said Mrs. Felts was shot in the upper left side and was found in a bathroom and Felts was shot in the head and was found in the adjoining master bedroom.
Taylor said they are believed to have died around 5 to 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Shew said the incident was reported to authorities at 5:39 p.m. Friday after a relative who checked on Mr. and Mrs. Felts regularly found Felts dead. He said Mrs. Felts was deceased when sheriff’s department deputies found her.
Shew said no note was found.
He said both bodies were sent to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem for an autopsy and that the investigation won’t be completed until autopsy results are known and analysis at a State Bureau of Investigation lab is finished.
State Bureau of Investigation agents also were at the scene. Ronda Fire Department first responders and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services also were on the scene.
Mr. and Mrs. Felts lived at the end of Meadowlark Lane, which is off Cedar Forest Road. They raised two children on their Clingman farm and Felts was in the auto glass installation business for many years.
